Note: | About two decades ago, Hendrik Kerstens (1956, THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS) decided to fully and exclusively devote himself to photography. Paula, his daughter, quickly became his favourite subject. Kerstens photographed her almost obsessively, recording her every day, as if trying to capture every moment of life for eternity. His portraits, remarkably following the Dutch art historical tradition, show her strength, but also her vulnerability. The styling, framing and lighting reveal his fascination with the 17th-century Dutch masters, and the astute observer will immediately recognise the manner of Vermeer skilfully translated in graceful, delicate plays of light. In all, 60 portraits of Paula are published in this volume. |
